Who are volunteers?
Volunteers are typically students with an involvement in Telecommunications, who are interested in the conference experience. There are two types of volunteers: Technical and Student. Please be sure that you apply for the proper volunteer category.

  • Technical Volunteers will report to the PTC'07 Technical Volunteers Coordinator.
  • Student Volunteers will report to the Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC) staff.

Unemployed or retired willing parties may also be accepted as volunteers for our program.

How do I benefit from this conference?
The Volunteer Program offers each volunteer:

  • The opportunity to participate in sessions that relate to your field of study and/or interest as an attendee.
  • An exclusive attendee list for internship and employment opportunities.
  • Access to up-to-the-minute information, breaking news from first-hand sources and access to PTC'07 speaker notes.
  • Information provided at PTC'07 is not available in textbooks or publications.
  • A great opportunity to take in all the latest trends and developments.
  • The opportunity to meet and talk with industry leaders from companies such as France Telecom, HBO International, AT&T, Inc., SK Telecom and much more.
  • Visit the Mid-Pacific Marketplace (MPM) Exhibits, and discuss the latest products and services that are emerging in the industry.
  • Access to over 50 exhibitors, attend 4 solid days of sessions and mixing events (a value of $1,430).
  • Mix and mingle with the industry's elite at all social events, which include a reception, lunches and hospitality suites that are open to the attendees.

What qualifications are required?

AV Tech Volunteer Requirements (Limited Availability)

We are looking for people with a background in building, running networks and/or associated Audio-Visual technology.

  • Must be over 18 years of age by the time of the conference.
  • Complete and send the Application Form.
  • Commit to being available during the period of time for which you will volunteer.
  • Must volunteer at least 16 hours to receive full benefits.
  • Must be a full-time student of a university/college/institute.
  • Participate in the Volunteer Orientation.
  • Dress professionally.

Student Volunteer Requirements

  • We are looking for willing and energetic students for a variety of non-technical duties.
  • Must be over 18 years of age by the time of the conference.
  • Complete and send the Application Form along with evidence of full-time student stature.
  • Commit to being available during the period of time for which you will volunteer.
  • Must volunteer at least 16 hours to receive full benefits.
  • Must be a full-time student of a university/college/institution.
  • Participate in the Volunteer Orientation.
  • Dress professionally.

Volunteer Orientation

All volunteers must attend the volunteer orientation on Monday, 8 January 2007, 1800 - 1930, so as to enrich their knowledge in the area of involvement during the conference.

  • Learn more about the conference and volunteering.
  • Find out about all the areas and/or topics that need to be covered during the event.
  • Familiarize yourself with the specific location where you will be providing your services.
  • Get an outline of your responsibilities and duties.

Note: Volunteers are responsible to review the information given to them and should have a good understanding of the venue, program, services, etc.

When will my service be required?

Some volunteers will commence as early as 0700 and end at 2000 hours. A total of 100 volunteers are estimated to participate in the Volunteer Program. Even though the conference will begin on 14 January 2007, volunteers are needed from 11 - 18 January 2007.

  • There is a minimum of 16 hours total for both volunteer types, in order to receive the benefits of the program.

In what areas could I be involved in?

There are many areas that need to be covered.

Technical Volunteers are expected to have knowledge and experience in building and running a large distributed network to supply connectivity for the conference. They will also be setting up and operating the specialized AV equipment that a conference of this type would require.

Student Volunteers are subject to assist in registration, MPM exhibits, Planet PTC ® , sessions, meal functions, set-up & preparation, monitoring rooms, social events assistance, literature area, press-room, computer kiosk and miscellaneous duties.

Note: Even though volunteers are scheduled for a certain duty, at any given time, a PTC staff member may ask the volunteer to do something else.

Volunteers are able to attend any session when they are not scheduled for another duty. The topics to be discussed include:

When will I have the opportunity to attend a session?

Volunteers are able to attend any session when they are not scheduled for another duty.

Is an orientation provided?

All volunteers must attend the volunteer orientation on Monday, 8 January 2007 so as to enrich their knowledge in the area of involvement during the conference.

How do I sign up as a Volunteer?

There are three ways you can sign up as a volunteer.

    1. Internet: Fill in the Official Application Form found at; http://www.ptc07.org/information/volunteer_app.html after you have read all the information about PTC'07 Volunteers.
    2. Mail: Request the Official Application Form to be sent to you through mail by calling +1.808.941.3789 between 0800-1700 or e-mail Pat Crawford: pat@ptc.org . Complete the form and send to:

The Pacific Telecommunications Council will send the Official Application Form to all those who express an interest (email or telephone). The Official Application Form will be readily available and accessible in Hawaii and abroad.

What would I need to include with my application?

A proof of full-time student status is required along with your application. It can be your registration slip or school I.D. card both of them should state either semesters Fall '06, Winter '06 or Spring '07. A letter from your professor stating that you are a full-time student is welcomed as long it is written on the school's letterhead.

When and how will I be notified following my sign-up?

After your Application Form has been submitted, PTC will verify your information and student status. When verification is complete, you will receive a letter of acceptance.

Are accommodations and food provided at the conference?

  • No accommodation or travel assistance will be provided for this conference. Volunteers from outside of Hawaii should have their own travel and accommodation arrangements in place.
  • Some meals, such as lunches are provided. However, breakfast is not provided.
  • Volunteers should eat prior to reporting for duty.

Would a U.S. Visa be required if coming from abroad?

A U.S. Visa requirement may or may not be required. Some countries will require for you to obtain a U.S. Visa. Please check with the U.S. Embassy in your region.

If you would need to obtain a visa, an invitation letter to the conference will help you process your visa.
